Illustration Process: She Buried Her Hands


Following below you can find images of my process for “She Buried Her Hands” from the short story “Her Husband’s Hands” by Adam-Troy Castro. Not included are pictures are other concept sketches, but here I began with the notion of her husband (nothing but a pair of hands) both comforting her after rerturning from war, and causing the pain that comes from his burdens.


At first, I liked the idea of her hanging, but it felt too arbitrary. Then the idea struck, she’s burying her hands, she’s buring her husband’s hands. Likewise, I know had a setting.


Beautiful…right? haha. Concepts don’t need to be pretty.
